Project Benefits

The proposed project serves a very dense corridor defined by the federal government as a "Corridor of National Significance." By 2020, more than two million long-distance trips will be made in the corridor. The system is projected to serve 134,000 of these riders per day by 2020. Travel time savings on Maglev, from one end of the line to the other, are estimated to be 80 minutes.

The project will require minimal land for its elevated guideway, taking no more than the width of a standard freeway lane, yet carrying the equivalent of a full freeway of traffic. Maglev vehicles produce no pollution and emit much lower noise levels than roadway traffic or conventional trains operating on steel rail.

The project will support the demands of increased air travel by providing improved access to the region's principal airports. By greatly reducing access time from the western parts of the region to Ontario Airport, air travelers will have a viable alternative to LAX for airline travel outside of the region. This will reduce the pressures for expanding LAX to accommodate more passengers and air cargo.

Higher speed, reliable travel along the corridor will improve access between employment and population centers and help to accommodate the significant growth in population and travel demands projected to occur between now and 2020.

Anticipated benefits on Maglev deployment, based on the initial Project Description submitted o the Federal Railroad Administration in June 2000 include:
